Sustainable & Safe River Recreation

ERA promotes safe and sustainable recreational use of the Elk River through sharing knowledge, river safety tips as well as through the Elk River Map & Guide.

Current/On-Going Sustainable and Safe River Recreation projects

Elk River Map Guide. Developed and distributed 500 copies of this guide, highlighting watershed facts, hazards, put-in/take-outs, fishing friendly and safety tips. This project also includes a geocache challenge with 14 sites in the watershed.

Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up (2010-present). ERA has coordinated annual clean-ups in Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie in partnership with local organizations and community volunteers. Due to increased toileting waste at public put-in/take-outs, ERA is working toward improving recreational river amenities for the Elk River.

Silver Springs Stewardship (2014-present). Conducted community outreach and surveys both on location and online to assess perceived needs, current condition as well as to gather community opinion about Silver Springs. ERA then completed a Feasibility Study for a Backcountry Toilet at Silver Springs to address the issue of toileting waste and to see improved management of this alpine recreational jewel in the watershed. ERA has developed and installed interpretive and directional signage, and improved public parking and new access trail to Silver Springs.
